Vinland Saga, Episode 2: Sword
Synopsis
Bjorn makes his debut in this episode as one of Askeladd’s closest men, appearing in the final scene at Askeladd’s camp on Streymoy, one of the Faroe Islands. His presence helps establish the brutal nature of Askeladd’s band and their disdain for outsiders, particularly Christians.
During the scene, Bjorn stands alongside Atli, watching their fellow mercenaries torment a Christian monk tied to a post. As the men take turns throwing axes at the defenseless monk, Bjorn remains mostly silent, observing the spectacle. When Atli tries to offer drinks to the nearby Jomsvikings, who remain stoic and ignore him, Bjorn dismisses Atli’s attempt, noting that the Jomsvikings claim to dislike cheap alcohol. This brief exchange subtly hints at Bjorn’s practicality and awareness of the differences between Askeladd’s group and the disciplined Jomsvikings.
While Bjorn does not play a direct role in the violence of this scene, his presence solidifies his association with Askeladd’s crew and foreshadows his future involvement as Askeladd’s right-hand man. His calm and observant demeanor contrasts with the more reckless and rowdy members of the group, hinting at a more composed but still ruthless personality.
