  • Episode begins at the bridge, where construction is taking place*

Sakura: *yawns* Tazuna: It looks like you’ve got some time to kill there all by yourself. Sakura: Hmm? Tazuna: What happened to the blond boy and that stuck up boy? Sakura: They’re in the middle of the tree-climbing training. Tazuna: You don’t have to do that? Sakura: I’m exceptional, so Kakashi Sensei told me to guard you. Tazuna: Really? Sakura: *seethes* What?!

  • Tazuna places a wooden board next to a stack of wooden boards. Giichi, one of the workers, walks up behind him*

Giichi: You got a minute, Tazuna? Tazuna: Huh? What’s up, Giichi? Giichi: Uh, actually…I gave it a lot of thought. Building this bridge…will you let me quit? Tazuna: Why so suddenly?! Not you too?! Giichi: Tazuna, I’ve had a bond with you from the old days. I’d like to cooperate, but if we push it too far, Gato will set his sights on us, too. Tazuna: Hmm. Giichi: Also…if you get killed, everything is lost! Why don’t you just stop building the bridge? Sakura: …? Tazuna: Not a chance… Giichi: …? Tazuna: This is our bridge. This is the bridge that everyone in town has built believing that it would generate distribution and transportation for this poor Land of Waves that has few resources. Giichi: But if it goes so far as to take our lives… Tazuna: It’s already afternoon…Let’s call it a day. Giichi: Tazuna! Tazuna: Giichi…you don’t have to come back tomorrow. Sakura: …

  • Scene changes to the forest where Naruto and Sasuke are training, at sunset*

Naruto: Damn it!

  • Naruto pants heavily with marks all over his clothes and face*

Naruto: What the heck is up with this?

  • Sasuke pants heavily with marks all over his clothes and face. Naruto and Sasuke look up at their respective trees, before glaring at each other, and standing up abruptly*

Naruto (Thinking): I won’t lose to you! Sasuke: …

  • Naruto and Sasuke run up the side of their trees*
  • Scene changes to Tazuna and Sakura walking through town*

Sakura: Say, where are we going? Tazuna: I was asked to get some ingredients for dinner on the way home… Man: Thief!

  • A body runs through the street with loaves of bread in both hands*

Sakura: Oh…?

  • Sakura notices two children sitting on the street*

Sakura (Thinking): What’s up with…this town? Tazuna: We’re here… Shopkeeper: Welcome…

  • Sakura and Tazuna enter the shop. Little amounts of vegetables are littered throughout the shelves*

Sakura (Thinking): There’s hardly anything here…

  • A man, Teguse, walks behind Sakura, noticing her bag*

Teguse: Hehe!

  • Teguse reaches for Sakura’s bag. Sakura notices but thinks the man was attempting to grab her butt*

Sakura: You pervert!

  • Sakura delivers a backwards spinning kick with her right leg to Teguse’s face, causing him to bleed from the nose as two of his teeth are knocked out*

Teguse: Augh! You’re…wrong…

  • Tazuna and Sakura walk through the street*

Tazuna: Man, I was really surprised earlier. Sakura: What’s going on with this town?!

  • A girl, Ageha, grabs Sakura from behind*

Sakura (Thinking): Again?! Hey, you…

  • Sakura suddenly turns around to see a little girl, messy and unkempt*

Sakura: Heh? Ageha: Gimme some!

  • Ageha holds out her hands*

Sakura: Oh…here…

  • Sakura reaches into her bag and grabs a handful of candy*

Ageha: Yay! Thank you!

  • Sakura nods her head with a sad look on her face*

Tazuna: This is how it’s been ever since Gato showed up. Here, all the adults have turned into cowards. Sakura: … Tazuna: So that’s why now that bridge is necessary…It’s a symbol of bravery…In order to restore their spirt, so they don’t keep running away…For the people of this land…who have set their minds on remaining passive… Sakura: … Tazuna: If we can just…complete that bridge…

  • Tazuna clenches his fist*

Tazuna: …this town will return to how it once was…and everyone will come back. Sakura (Thinking): Sasuke…Naruto…

  • Scene changes to the forest where Naruto and Sasuke are training. Naruto and Sasuke run up the side of their trees, keeping pace with one another, before Naruto slips, marking the tree with a kunai before back-flipping off the tree and landing to his feet. Naruto looks up, watching Sasuke continue running up the side of his tree*

Naruto (Thinking): Damn it! Damn it! Are you telling me that Sasuke’s still climbing?!

  • Sasuke stops running, marking the tree with a kunai, before leaping between his tree and Naruto’s to get to the ground*

Sasuke (Thinking): Darn it! He’s gradually catching up…

  • Sasuke backflips in mid-air, just before hitting the ground, landing to his feet*

Naruto (Thinking): Damn it! No! No! If I let myself get distracted by Sasuke, my concentration will be disturbed!

  • Naruto thinks back to when he asked Sakura for tips*

Naruto: Hey Sakura, can you give me some tips? Sakura: Huh? Naruto: Without telling Sasuke, okay, okay? Sakura: Listen. Chakra uses spiritual energy, so you mustn’t get too strained or frantic. Relax and concentrate on the tree so that you can constantly accumulate a fixed amount of Chakra in the bottom of your feet.

  • Naruto snaps back to the present*

Naruto (Thinking): Concentrate! Concentrate!

  • A blue glow appears around Naruto’s feet*

Naruto (Thinking): Okay. I’m getting good vibes, I say! Okay! This is it!

  • Naruto begins to run towards his tree*

Sasuke: Hey…Naruto!

  • Naruto falls over, landing face-first into the ground*

Naruto: Jeez, what the heck’s wrong with you?! Don’t interfere while I’m trying to concentrate! Sasuke: U…Uh…Well… Naruto: W…What is it?! Naruto (Thinking): I’m not used to him speaking to me first… Sasuke: Y…You asked Sakura to give you some tips before…What did she say to you? Naruto: Huh? *smiles* I’m not telling. Sasuke: Nuh?!

  • Scene changes to Tazuna’s house, at night*

Tazuna: Man…This is really fun! It’s been a long time since we’ve had a meal with this many people!

  • Sasuke and Naruto quickly scarf down their food*

Sasuke and Naruto: Seconds please!

  • Sasuke and Naruto glare at each other, before both throwing up on the ground*

Sakura: Stop eating if you’re going to vomit! Sasuke: No, I’ll eat. Naruto: I have to eat even if it means enduring. I have to get strong as quickly as possible, so… Kakashi: Yes, yes. But vomiting is different.

  • Sakura stares at a torn picture of Tazuna, Inari, and Tsunami on the wall*

Sakura: Excuse me, why is there a torn picture hanging here? Inari was looking at this all through dinner. This picture looks like someone who was in the picture was deliberately torn off. Tazuna: …! Inari: …! Tsunami: …! Kakashi: … Tsunami: It’s my husband… Tazuna: He’s a man who was once called a hero of this town…

  • Inari gets up and leaves the room*

Tsunami: Inari! Where are you going?

  • Tsunami walks to the door and opens it*

Tsunami: Dad! I’m always telling you not to talk about that person in front of Inari!

  • Tsunami exits the room*

Tazuna: *groans* Sakura: What’re you saying happened with Inari? Kakashi: It appears there’s some kind of good reason. Tazuna: Inari had a father not related by blood…It was like they were a real father and son who got along really well… Naruto: Eh? Tazuna: Back then, Inari was a child who laughed all the time…However…*cries* Kakashi: …? Sakura: …? Naruto: …? Sasuke: …? Tazuna: However…Inari has changed…ever since that incident with his father. The word bravery was eternally taken from the people of this island and from Inari…With that day, that incident, as the trigger. Kakashi: That incident? What happened to Inari? Tazuna: To explain the incident, I must first…tell you about the man who was called the hero of this land. Naruto: Hero? Tazuna: It was around three years ago…when Inari met the man…

Inari: Pochi!

  • Akane holds Pochi, Inari’s dog, within his arm*

Akane: Wrong! His name’s Shooting Star…As of today, he’s my dog! Inari: He’s not Shooting Star! He’s my Pochi! Give him back! Pochi’s my friend! Who’s going to give him to the likes of you?!

  • Inari tries to wrestle out of the two kids’ grips, but fails*

Akane: Shut up! Heh!

  • Akane throws Pochi into the sea*

Inari: Pochi!

  • Pochi struggles to stay afloat*

Akane: That’s cuz you wouldn’t hand him over quietly…Now I couldn’t care less about that dog! Hey, let him go!

  • The two kids let go of Inari’s arms*

Inari: What have you done?! Are you trying to kill Pochi?! Akane: Hmph! He’s your special mutt, right? Then save him, quick. Inari: …! Akane: What’s the matter? Is it okay with you if he dies?!

  • Inari walks to the edge of the dock as Pochi continues to struggle to stay afloat*

Inari (Thinking): Of course I’m not okay with him dying! He’s my only friend! But… Akane: *laughs* Look. He can’t even doggy paddle even though he’s a dog! Inari (Thinking): But…I’m sorry, Pochi…I can’t swim… Akane: Hey! If you’re his owner, dive in after him!

  • Akane kicks Inari in the back, knocking him into the water. Inari struggles to stay afloat*

Kid: This is bad, Akane. What if he can’t swim? Inari: S…Save me! Akane: Leave him be. Kid: B…But…

  • Akane grabs the kid by the collar of his shirt*

Akane: Then why don’t you go save if you like?!

  • Inari continues his struggle to stay afloat*

Inari (Thinking): I…I don’t want to die…Somebody save me!

  • Pochi suddenly learns how to doggy paddle, swimming to shore*

Inari: P…Pochi! Pochi!

  • Scene changes back to the present*

Tazuna: I’m gonna digress, but…Pochi learned how to doggy paddle then.

  • Scene changes back to the past*

Inari: Pochi! Akane: Shooting Star escaped. Get him!

  • Akane and the two kids run after Pochi, as Inari sinks under the surface of the water*

Inari (Thinking): Oh…I can’t breathe…This…is it…

  • Inari wakes up on the shore*

Kaiza: Are you awake, boy? Inari: Huh?!

  • Inari sits up to see Kaiza grilling fish in a fire pit*

Kaiza: I gave those kids a good scolding. Here, eat! Inari (Thinking): Is this God? Oh… Inari: Did you…save me?! Kaiza: Just eat! Start with that. I see. You were betrayed by your dog, too…In my country, dogs are creatures that have a keen sense of loyalty…Well, you betrayed your dog’s trust first, so there’s nothing you can do about that. Inari: I was scared and couldn’t move. I wanted to save him…But…I have no guts, so…*cries* Kaiza: That’s right.

  • Kaiza places his hand on Inari’s head*

Kaiza: Of course a kid you age would be scared. Inari: Eh? Kaiza: But you know…boy. Just remember this. Inari: Huh? Kaiza: If you’re a man choose a lifestyle you won’t regret… Inari: Huh? Kaiza: For things I truly hold dear to myself, I’ll protect them until the very end with both these arms. Even if it’s tough, or sad, I’ll stick it out…even if it looks like I might lose my life! Inari: …

  • Scene changes back to the present*

Tazuna: His name was Kaiza and he was a fisherman who’d come to this land from another country in search of his dreams. After that, Inari really took to Kaiza. It may have been because Inari had lost his real father when he was too young to remember anything. But he was very attached to Kaiza. They were like father and son…It didn’t take long for Kaiza to become…a member of the family. And he was a man this town needed.

  • Scene changes back to the past. A man bursts through the door to Kaiza’s house, as it rains heavily outside*

Man: We…we’ve got trouble, Kaiza! The river dam has broken from this rain! Kaiza: …! Man: At this rate, District D will be consumed! Kaiza: What?! Inari: Dad! Kaiza: Inari, go out back and get some rope! Inari: Okay!

  • A group of villagers crowd around the broken dam*

Man #1: It’s no good! The only thing we can do is to attach a rope and pull… Man #2: Don’t talk nonsense! How are we going to attach a rope?! We’d die if we were to go into such a furious current! Man #3: But if we drag our feet, District D will be annihilated! What should we do? Kaiza: I’ll do it.

  • Kaiza walks through the crowd of villagers*

Men: Kaiza! Man #3: Don’t be foolish! Man #2: Even you wouldn’t be able to! Inari: Dad!

  • Kaiza places his hand on Inari’s head*

Kaiza: Don’t worry…Your dad’s unmatched. Your dad loves the town you’re from, so…

  • Kaiza ties a rope around his waist*

Kaiza (Thinking): For things I truly hold dear to myself…

  • Kaiza jumps into the river, swimming through the rushing current*

Kaiza (Thinking): Even if I lose my life…I’ll protect them to the end…with both these arms! Inari: Dad, hang in there!

  • Kaiza reaches the broken part of the dam, attaching a rope to it*

Man: He did it! The rope…the rope’s attached! Okay, everybody pull! Men: Yeah!

  • Scene changes back to the present*

Tazuna: From then on…the people of this land called Kaiza a hero. And he became a father that Inari could be proud of. It was around that time when Gato set his sights on this land. And then, one night…

  • Scene changes to the past, at a warehouse, where Gato’s men hold Kaiza. One of Gato’s men continuously beats a restrained Kaiza with a long wooden rod*

Gato: I heard…That you’re going to protect this town with those arms… Kaiza: …

  • Gato’s man strikes Kaiza in the back with a rod*

Kaiza: Augh!

  • Kaiza glares at Gato*

Gato: Tch! I dare you to!

  • Gato’s man kicks Kaiza in the back, knocking him over*

Kaiza: Augh! Gato’s Men: *laugh*

  • Two of Gato’s men, who are very large, appear over Kaiza while holding large hammers. They simultaneously slam the hammers down on Kaiza*

Kaiza: Aah!

  • A group of villagers crowd around a fenced area. Inside the fenced area, Gato and his bodyguards stand next to Kaiza, who is restrained to a wooden cross, with both of his arms broken*

Gato: Listen up! This man resisted through force, the policies of the Gato corporation and disturbed the order of this nation. Therefore, he will now be executed! I just hope that such trivial matters will never occur again.

  • Giichi and Inari stand at the fence*

Inari: Dad! Giichi: Stop, Inari…

  • Kaiza smiles at Inari*

Gato: Do it…

  • Zori draws his sword from its sheathe*

Inari: Dad…Dad!

  • Blood flies into the air*

Inari (Thinking): Didn’t you tell me? That you’d…protect…me and the people of this land…with both of your arms? Dad, you liar…

  • Scene changes back to the present*

Tazuna: Ever since then, Inari has changed…as well as Tsunami…and the townspeople… Naruto: …

  • Naruto thinks about Inari’s words when they first met*

Inari: Hero, that’s just stupid. There’s no such thing!

  • Naruto thinks about Inari crying over a picture of Kaiza before snapping back to the present. Naruto abruptly gets up from his chair, but slips and falls to the ground*

Sakura: What’re you doing, Naruto? Kakashi: You’ve had enough training for today. You’ve built up too much Chakra. You’ll die if you move any more than that. Naruto: I’ll prove it. Tazuna: Huh? Sakura: Prove what?

  • Naruto slowly stands to his feet*

Naruto: I’ll prove that…there are heroes…in this world!

  • Episode ends*
