Inari (Thinking): Naruto and others are out there fighting! We should be too!

  • Inari knocks on the door of a house*

Inari: Old man! Old man Giichi! Please open up! Let’s go to the bridge! If we all do it together, we can beat Gato and his men this time!

  • Inari reaches for the door knob as Giichi suddenly locks it*

Giichi: Inari…I made up my mind not to fight anymore. Even your father…The man we called a hero…He’s not with us anymore. If we were to fight, many lives would be lost. I don’t want to lose something that’s special to me anymore. No one wants to regret again.

  • Inari clenches his fists*

Inari: I…I don’t want to regret again, either. That’s why we must fight!

  • Inari remembers Kaiza’s words*

Kaiza: A man should live his life without regrets.

Inari: I love mommy and grandpa. And you too old man Giichi. I love all the people here! I finally realized…Nothing is accomplished if I just cry all the time! I finally got it!

  • Inari runs down the steps of Giichi’s house and leaves. Giichi stands with his back leaning on the door as he winces*

Agari: Inari…has grown into a fine man.

  • Agari, Giichi’s wife, sits at a small table knitting*

Agari: Will you just let Inari go there by himself?

  • Inari goes around the village, knocking on everyone’s doors*

Inari: Open up! Hey! I’m asking you to fight with me! Old man! Please listen to me! Why…Why won’t anyone open the door to me?

  • Inari remembers Naruto’s words*

Naruto: You are strong!

  • Inari snaps back to the present*

Inari: Naruto…

  • Scene changes to the bridge, as Haku has just asked Naruto to kill him*

Naruto: … Haku: What are you hesitating for? Naruto: Keh?! I just don’t get it! The only reason you are allowed to live is because you stay strong? Haku: … Naruto: There must be something other than just fighting…There must be some other way for you to make the others accept you! Haku: Remember when we met at the forest? Do you know what I thought? That you and I are much alike. Naruto: …! Haku: I’m sure you can relate to me. I apologize for dirtying your hands with my blood. Naruto: Is that it? Is there really no other way? Haku: No. Naruto: If only…we had met under different circumstances, we could’ve been friends.

  • Naruto charges at Haku while brandishing a kunai*

Haku (Thinking): Please…promise me you will grasp your dream. Naruto (Thinking): He too…Sasuke also had dreams of his own! Naruto: *roars* Haku (Thinking): Thank you…You will become stronger. Tazuna: The super thick fog has finally begun to clear. Sakura: There are two over there! They are facing off each other. Tazuna: Huh? I can’t see well… Sakura: Which one is Kakashi Sensei…One moved!

  • Kakashi charges at Zabuza. Haku suddenly senses Zabuza’s situation*

Haku: Huh? Naruto: *roars*

  • Naruto swings his kunai at Haku, who grabs Naruto’s hand and stops his swing*

Naruto: …! Haku: Forgive me, Naruto…

  • Haku weaves several hand signs with his right hand*

Haku: I cannot die yet!

  • Haku vanishes from Naruto’s side in a flicker. Kakashi runs towards the restrained Zabuza with his Raikiri. A vent of steam emerges from a crack in the ground*

Zabuza (Thinking): Is this the end…?

Tazuna: What was that?

  • Blood pours onto the ground in front of Kakashi, as his ninja dogs disappear into puffs of smoke. In front of the puddle of blood, Kakashi’s summoning scroll is revealed to have been struck with several senbon. A mirror of ice is shown with blood smeared all over it*

Zabuza: …!

  • In front of the ice mirror, and in between Zabuza and Kakashi, Haku is revealed to have been impaled through the chest by Kakashi’s Raikiri*

  • Inari grabs his crossbow and walks to the door*

Tsunami: Wait! You’re just a child! Inari: I may be a child, but I already know what it means to fight. Because I’m my father’s son! Tsunami: …!

  • Inari opens the door*

Tsunami: Wait a moment, Inari!

  • Shadows of several people, one with a pitchfork, are shown in front of Inari*

Inari: …!

Naruto: Huh?!

  • Blood continues to pour on the ground, from Haku’s chest*

Naruto: What the heck is going on here?! Tazuna: Isn’t that the masked boy? Kakashi (Thinking): I didn’t expect him to jump in to save Zabuza…The boy…is already dead. Zabuza: *laughs* You did great, Haku.

  • Zabuza jumps up and draws his Kubikiribocho*

Sakura: Kakashi Sensei! Kakashi (Thinking): He intends to slash me along with the boy?! Zabuza: That was a really great find I made! Even in his final moment…

  • Kakashi tries to pull his hand away from Haku, but finds it stuck within his grip*

Zabuza: …he gave me such a perfect opportunity! Naruto: …!

  • Zabuza swings his Kubikiribocho down at Kakashi and Haku, before thinking back to when he told Haku they had to leave the Land of Water*

Zabuza: Haku, bad news. I have to leave the Land of Water as of tonight. However, I’ll return to this land someday. I will rule over this land. To do that, what I need isn’t consolation, encouragement or empty words. What I really need is… Haku: I already know. You have nothing to fear. I am your weapon, Zabuza. Keep me by you as a mere tool that heeds your every word. Zabuza: You’re a good boy!

  • Scene changes back to the present. Zabuza remembers when he first met Haku, before charging towards Kakashi and swing his Kubikiribocho down towards him. Kakashi grabs Haku and jumps into the air, avoiding the attack. Kakashi back-flips several times before landing several meters away*

Zabuza: *laughs* Haku died and you were able to move, huh? Naruto: Keh! I won’t forgive you! Kakashi: Naruto! You just stay there and watch!

  • Kakashi lays Haku’s corpse on the ground, before closing Haku’s eyes*

Kakashi: This is…my battle! Sakura: Naruto…Naruto! It’s good to see you!

  • Naruto slumps down*

Naruto (Thinking): Sakura… Sakura: Where’s Sasuke?

  • Naruto looks away*

Sakura: Naruto…Where is Sasuke? Kakashi (Thinking): Sakura… Zabuza: Kakashi! You have no time to take your eyes off me!

  • Zabuza rushes at Kakashi with his Kubikiribocho in his hand. Zabuza begins to swing his Kubikiriboch, as Kakashi lifts himself up on his hands and delivers a kick to Zabuza’s face with his left leg*

Zabuza: Augh! Tazuna: Why don’t I go with you? That way, you won’t be going against your Sensei’s word.

  • Sakura grabs Tazuna’s hand*

Sakura: Right…

  • Sakura and Tazuna run past Naruto, going to Sasuke’s location*

Naruto: Sasuke…

  • Sakura reaches Sasuke’s senbon-riddled body*

Sakura: Huh?! Tazuna: Ah?!

  • Sakura falls to her knees and places her hand on Sasuke’s cheek*

Sakura: He’s cold. This isn’t Genjutsu, is it? Tazuna: Don’t mind me. This isn’t the time to hold back your emotions…

  • Sakura strokes Sasuke’s cheek*

Sakura: I…I always got perfect scores at the Ninja Academy… Tazuna: Huh? Sakura: I memorized all the hundreds of shinobi rules. All the tests were a breeze. Until one day, this question came up…State Rule #25 of the Ways of the Shinobi…As always, I simply wrote down the answer without batting an eye. *cries* “A shinobi must never show his true feelings under any circumstances, no matter what…The mission always comes first. A ninja must have the strength of character never to shed any tears…”

  • Sakura lays her head on Sasuke’s chest*

Tazuna (Thinking): Is this…how it must be for a shinobi? That is so unbearably painful… Sakura: Sasuke…*wails*

  • Naruto clutches his stomach and winces. Kakashi and Zabuza clash in mid-air before jumping away from each other. Zabuza has two kunai embedded in his left arm, as he kneels to the ground and pants heavily*

Zabuza (Thinking): Why…? Why can’t I keep up? Zabuza: Damn you!

  • Zabuza charges at Kakashi and begins to swing his Kubikiribocho at him, as Kakashi casually slams the back of his fist into Zabuza’s face, knocking him back. Kakashi spins around, before again slamming the back of his fist into Zabuza’s face*

Zabuza: Why you…!

  • Zabuza swings his Kubikiribocho at Kakashi, who hops backwards to avoid it. Zabuza swings his Kubikiribocho down at Kakashi, who vanishes from his sight, as he craters the ground with his strike. Kakashi appears behind Zabuza in a flicker, grabbing the back of his neck*

Kakashi: You can’t possibly defeat me the way you are now. Zabuza: What was that? Kakashi: You still don’t know…What true strength means!

  • Gato appears on the edge of the bridge*

Gato: *laughs* Let’s see how things are going…

  • Kakashi spins two kunai on the tips of two of his fingers, before grabbing them with his palm and aiming them at Zabuza*

Kakashi: Goodbye, Demon!

  • As Kakashi swings the two kunai towards Zabuza, Zabuza swings his Kubikiribocho behind his back. Before Zabuza can complete his swing, Kakashi stabs the two kunai in his upper right arm, right as Zabuza’s right arms knocks him off his feet. Kakashi back handsprings to his feet, as Zabuza’s Kubikiribocho flies out of his hand*

Naruto: Huh? Kakashi: Both of your arms have now been disabled. You can’t even weave a sign.

  • Gato suddenly appears on the bridge, in view of Team 7 and Zabuza, with dozens of armed mercenaries behind him*

Kakashi: Huh? Naruto: Huh? Gato: Oh! You really got it this time. Zabuza: … Gato: You disappoint me, Zabuza.

  • Naruto witnessing Haku’s death is a huge moment for him, further shaping his understanding of the shinobi world.
  • Sakura’s reaction to Sasuke’s apparent death is incredibly emotional, showing that all the shinobi rules she followed don’t prepare her for real loss.

  • The sudden appearance of Gato and his mercenaries flips the entire conflict on its head. It’s an unexpected twist that makes Zabuza’s situation even more tragic.

Character Development (10/10) – Emotionally Devastating & Powerful

  • Haku – A Tragic End to a Devoted Warrior
    • Haku’s self-sacrifice is one of the most painful yet fitting ends in the series.
      • Even in death, he proves his loyalty to Zabuza, using the last of his strength to protect him.
      • The slow reveal of Haku being impaled by Raikiri is shocking and heart-wrenching.
      • His final thoughts, thanking Naruto and asking him to pursue his dream, are incredibly bittersweet.
      • Haku’s devotion to Zabuza has now stripped him of everything—even his own life.
    • The scene of Naruto realizing Haku is dead is another defining moment.
      • His anger, confusion, and frustration make it clear that he doesn’t fully understand this world yet.
      • It also sets up his core philosophy—he refuses to accept that shinobi are just tools.
  • Zabuza – From Ruthless Killer to Broken Man
    • Zabuza losing Haku completely changes the battle dynamic.
      • He’s left defenseless without his tool, proving how much he relied on Haku’s power.
      • His initial reaction to Haku’s death is almost dismissive—calling it "useful"—which makes the eventual payoff even stronger.
    • Despite his bravado, Zabuza is now backed into a corner, getting thoroughly dominated by Kakashi.
      • The way he’s beaten down—his arms disabled, his sword lost—makes him feel completely vulnerable for the first time.
    • His one-sided loss is the beginning of his emotional breakdown, setting up the finale of the arc.
  • Naruto – Innocence vs. Reality
    • Naruto continues to struggle with the harsh realities of the shinobi world.
      • His anger and disbelief at Haku’s sacrifice show that he refuses to accept the idea that shinobi are mere tools.
      • This conflict is crucial to his development and will be a recurring theme throughout the series.
    • His emotional turmoil after seeing Haku dead is one of his strongest moments so far.
      • It’s not just sadness—he’s outright furious, and this will play a huge role in his view of the shinobi world.
    • His declaration of "I won’t forgive you!" to Zabuza is filled with pure emotion, but Kakashi telling him to stand back is an important lesson—Naruto isn’t ready for this fight yet.
  • Sakura – The Most Emotional Scene of the Episode
    • Sakura’s breakdown over Sasuke’s "death" is raw, painful, and beautifully done.
      • The contrast between her perfect academic performance and her inability to handle real tragedy makes her feel incredibly human.
      • Her recalling "Shinobi Rule #25"—that a ninja must never show their emotions—before completely breaking down is one of the strongest moments in early Naruto.
      • Tazuna’s reaction—seeing the true pain of being a shinobi—is a great touch that emphasizes how cruel their world really is.
    • This is one of the few times Sakura’s emotions are the emotional heart of an episode, and it’s done extremely well.
  • Kakashi – The Undisputed MVP
    • Kakashi is at his best in this episode, both as a fighter and a leader.
      • His Raikiri almost finishes Zabuza off in one move, and the fact that Haku had to intervene proves how deadly he really is.
      • His absolute dominance over Zabuza after Haku’s death is satisfying to watch.
      • Every move he makes is calculated, and his intelligence is fully on display.
    • Despite his strength, he still mourns Haku in his own way.
      • Closing Haku’s eyes is a sign of respect, showing that Kakashi acknowledges his strength and sacrifice.
    • His words to Naruto—"This is my battle"—show that he is fully in control, keeping his students from letting their emotions interfere.
  • Inari – His Moment of Triumph
    • His speech to the villagers is the culmination of his growth.
      • After being a helpless child, he now takes charge, refusing to let fear stop him from acting.
    • The moment when the villagers finally stand with him is a great payoff.
  • Gato – The True Villain of the Arc Emerges
    • His sudden appearance is a game-changer.
      • For the first time, we see that Zabuza might not be the true final boss of this arc.
    • His condescending attitude toward Zabuza and casual dismissal of the whole battle immediately makes him a more despicable villain.
    • The fact that he brought an army of mercenaries adds another layer of danger.

Action & Combat (9.5/10) – Brutal & Tactical

  • Haku's death is the ultimate moment of self-sacrifice, and the slow realization that he’s taken Kakashi’s Raikiri to protect Zabuza is masterfully executed.
  • Kakashi’s fight with Zabuza shifts drastically—going from an even match to a complete beatdown.
    • Kakashi dodging Zabuza’s desperate attacks with ease shows just how far apart they are in ability.
    • The final exchange, where Kakashi disables both of Zabuza’s arms, is brutal and humiliating for him.
  • Naruto’s brief confrontation with Haku before his death is intense, but the emotional weight stops him from finishing it.
  • Zabuza vs. Kakashi still has one final round to go, but this episode makes it clear that Zabuza has lost his edge.

Themes & Symbolism (10/10) – A Masterpiece of Emotion and Morality

  • "The way of the shinobi" is fully explored in this episode.
    • Is a shinobi just a tool, or are they people?
    • Zabuza believes shinobi must be heartless weapons, but Naruto refuses to accept that.
  • Sakura’s emotional moment contrasts the cold reality of shinobi rules with the actual pain of loss.
  • Inari’s transformation from a scared boy to a leader proves that courage is something anyone can have.
  • Haku’s death symbolizes the cost of blind loyalty and devotion.

Final Verdict: 9.6/10 – A Devastating, Powerful, and Action-Packed Episode

  • ✔ Strengths:
    • Haku’s heartbreaking death and Naruto’s emotional turmoil.
    • Sakura’s best emotional moment in the series so far.
    • Kakashi completely dismantling Zabuza after losing Haku.
    • Inari’s character arc reaching its peak.
    • Gato’s arrival setting up the true final conflict.
    • Excellent action choreography with high emotional stakes.
  • ❌ Weaknesses:
    • Sakura still remains mostly a spectator outside of her emotional moment.
    • Some minor parts of Inari’s village scenes could have been trimmed.

This is one of the most powerful episodes in Naruto—a perfect blend of action, tragedy, and character depth.
