  • Episode begins where the left one left off, with Kakashi having seemingly been hit in the side by Sasuke’s kunai and shuriken. Suddenly a puff of smoke covers Kakashi’s body, and a log appears in his place with Sasuke’s kunai and shuriken embedded in it. Sasuke hurriedly jumps from tree to tree.*

Sasuke (Thinking): Damn! Another Kawarimi? He must have found out my location with those shuriken! He purposely lowered his guard! Serves me right…I fell for the trap.

  • Kakashi is shown to be hiding in foliage*

Kakashi (Thinking): So he’s over there, eh… Sakura (Thinking): Sasuke…where are you?! Don’t tell me, Kakashi Sensei already…No! That couldn’t happen to Sasuke, right?!

  • Sakura runs through the trees, before stumbling onto Kakashi, quickly jumping behind a bush to avoid detection*

Sakura (Thinking): Safe! He didn’t notice me. Kakashi: Sakura, behind you. Sakura: Huh?!

  • Kakashi suddenly appears behind Sakura*

Sakura: Aah!

  • Scene changes back to Naruto hanging from a tree*

Naruto: What’s up with that “A ninja must see through deception” stuff?! Damn it! I’ll never fail for his trap again!

  • Naruto brings his stomach to his knees and cuts the rope around his legs with a kunai. Doing several front flips, before turning around, and landing on his feet, only to be caught by yet another rope that ties around his right leg and hangs him from the same tree.*

Naruto: I fell for it again!

  • Scene changes back to Kakashi and Sakura. Kakashi covers the index and middle fingers of his left hand with his right hand. He then disappears in a swirl of leaves as Sakura looks as if she is in a trance.*

Sakura: Huh?! What was that? Hold on! Where’s Sensei?! Huh?! What’s going on? Huh?! What’s what?! Sasuke: Sakura… Sakura: Sasuke!

  • Sakura turns around to see Sasuke kneeling by a tree, with numerous kunai embedded throughout his body, as copious amounts of blood pour out from his wounds*

Sasuke: S…Sakura…p…please…help…me… Sakura: Aah!

  • Sakura falls to the ground unconscious out of shock. Kakashi stands on a far away tree branch watching her.*

Kakashi: Maybe I went a bit overboard…But it’s really something she should notice…

  • Scene changes to Sasuke*

Sasuke: Was that voice…Sakura’s?

  • Kakashi appears next to a tree behind Sasuke, still reading his book*

Kakashi: Shinobi Battle Skill #2, Genjutsu. Sakura was easily lured. Sasuke (Thinking): Genjutsu, huh…? An illusory mind controlling technique. I’m not surprised she got lured. However… Sasuke: I’m different from them. Kakashi: Why don’t you say that after you get a bell…Sasuke?

  • Sasuke launches a kunai and two shuriken at Kakashi, who jumps to the right to avoid them.*

Kakashi: It’s no use just using straightforward attacks.

  • Sasuke throws another kunai, cutting a rope that was attached to two trees in half.*

Kakashi (Thinking): A trap?!

  • Numerous kunai are launched towards Kakashi, who front flips into the air and out of the way of their path, leaving them embedded in a tree. Sasuke appears behind Kakashi in a blur.*

Kakashi (Thinking): What?!

  • Sasuke delivers a left kick towards Kakashi’s head, which Kakashi blocks with the back of his left forearm. Kakashi grabs Sasuke’s leg with his right hand. Sasuke brings his right arm back, before throwing a punch towards Kakashi’s head, who catches it with his left hand. Sasuke then turns himself upside down while held in the air by Kakashi, before bringing his right leg down towards Kakashi’s head, who blocks the kick with the back of his left forearm while still holding Sasuke’s right hand. Sasuke now reaches for the bells at Kakashi’s waist with his left hand*

Kakashi (Thinking): This guy’s…?!

  • Sasuke narrowly misses the bells as Kakashi launches himself backward. Sasuke flips to his feet.*

Kakashi (Thinking): What a guy. There’s no time to read “Make Out Paradise.”

  • Scene changes to Sakura, who wakes up*

Sakura: What? That’s right! I saw Sasuke on the verge of dying and I…Sasuke! Don’t die and leave me here! Where are you?!

  • Scene changes to Naruto who is still hanging from the tree*

Naruto: Hmm. Oh? So that’s what it looks like behind the logs.

  • Naruto notices the lunch boxes on a monument, behind the logs*

Naruto: Oh! There are box lunches on the stone! A ninja must see through deception…eh? Hehe!

  • Scene changes back to Kakashi and Sasuke*

Kakashi: Well! I’ll acknowledge that you’re different from those two. Sasuke: Hmph!

  • Sasuke quickly weaves hand signs*

Sasuke (Thinking: Horse! Tiger! Katon: Gokyaku no Jutsu! Kakashi (Thinking): What?! That’s not a Jutsu that a Genin can do…He shouldn’t have enough Chakra yet!

  • Sasuke shoots a stream of flames from his mouth, which Kakashi avoids. Sasuke burns a large crater in the ground, as the stream of fire dissipates, and dark smoke rises from the crater.*

Sasuke (Thinking): He’s gone! Is he behind me?! No, above me?! Where is he?! Kakashi: I’m under you!

  • Kakashi hand emerges from the ground, fragmenting it, as he grabs Sasuke’s left leg.*

Sasuke: What?! Kakashi: Doton: Shinju Zanshu no Jutsu!

  • Kakashi then pulls Sasuke down into the ground, leaving everything but his head submerged*

Sasuke: Aah! Kakashi: Shinobi Battle Skill #3, Ninjutsu. How’s that? You can’t move, heh? Sasuke: Hmph! Kakashi: Although, you’re…already starting to make your mark. But, oh well…they do say that the nail that sticks up gets hammered down, so…

  • Kakashi walks away while reading “Make Out Paradise”*

Sasuke: Damn it!

  • Scene changes to Naruto sitting on the memorial behind the logs*

Naruto: *laughs* I don’t have to naively take those bells, I’ll just eat in secret right now! Let’s eat!

  • Kakashi appears on the top of the memorial above and behind Naruto*

Kakashi: Hey. Naruto: I was just joking… Kakashi: Too late!

  • Scene changes back to Sasuke, still stuck in the ground.*

Sasuke (Thinking): Damn it! Is there this much of a difference in strength?

  • Sakura runs out of the trees and notices Sasuke*

Sasuke: Sakura… Sakura: Aah! This time it’s a freshly severed head?!

  • Sakura falls to the ground unconscious from shock*

Sasuke: What’s up with her?

  • Sakura wakes up to find Sasuke kneeling over her*

Sakura: Sasuke? You’re okay!

  • Sakura hugs Sasuke*

Sasuke: Hey, cut it out! Don’t cling to me! There’s not much time left until noon. I’m going. Sakura: Sasuke, you’re still going after the bells? Sasuke: I was able to touch them last time. Next time I’ll be able to take them. Sakura: What?! I…I see. Sure enough, you’re awesome, Sasuke. Sakura (Thinking): There’s no way I can take the bells from Sensei! At this rate, I’ll face separation from Sasuke… Sakura: Uh…say. There’s really no time left…So let’s just take it easy and try again next time.

  • Sasuke glares at Sakura. Sakura expresses shock before hanging her head down. Sasuke imagines the glare of Itachi’s Sharingan*

Sasuke: I’m the only one who can kill that man. Sakura: Huh? What? You mean Sensei? Sasuke: At that time…I was crying. Sakura: Crying? Sasuke: My… Sakura: What? What is it? Sasuke: I’m an avenger. I must become stronger than that man…I don’t have time for setbacks here…

  • Sakura imagines Sasuke’s words when they introduced themselves to Kakashi*

Sasuke: …to kill a certain man!

  • Back to the present. The clock that Kakashi had set earlier, goes off.*

Sasuke: Damn it! I wasted my time talking. Sakura: Sasuke…

  • Scene changes to Team 7 sitting by the logs, as Naruto is tied to the middle one with a rope*

Kakashi: Oh, oh, your stomachs are growling…By the way, about this exercise…Well! There’s no need for you guys to go back to the Academy.

  • Naruto reacts happily*

Sakura: What? I…All I did was lay unconscious. Is that okay? Sakura (Thinking): Love is victorious! Cha! Sasuke: Hmph! Sakura: Yahoo! Naruto: Then, then! That means the three of us… Kakashi: Yes. The three of you…must quit being ninja!

  • Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura stare at Kakashi in shock*
  • Scene changes to Hiruzen and Iruka sitting at a table*

Iruka: N…no way! Kakashi hasn’t passed a single person this whole time… Hiruzen: Iruka…Even I don’t know if it’s good for those kids to become shinobi right away…however…Kakashi’s judgements were correct…

  • Scene changes back to the training grounds*

Naruto: Quit being ninja?! What do you mean?! Uh, well it’s true, we weren’t able to take the bells. But why do we have to be told to quit?! Kakashi: That’s because you’re all squirts who don’t have the qualifications to become ninja.

  • Sasuke charges at Kakashi*

Naruto: Oh! Sakura: Sasuke!

  • Kakashi pins Sasuke to the ground, holding his arm behind his back with his foot on his head, while sitting on him*

Kakashi: I’m saying you’re squirts. Sakura: Don’t step on Sasuke! Kakashi: Are you kids thinking that being a ninja is easy? Huh?! Why do you think you’re doing this exercise in teams? Sakura: Huh? What do you mean? Kakashi: Put simply…it’s as if you guys have no understanding of the answer to this test. Naruto: Answer? Kakashi: Yes. The answer that determines passing or failing of this test. Sakura: That’s…what I’ve wanted to ask about for a while now. Kakashi: Man, are you guys brainless or what? Don’t you get the meaning of the three-man squad?! Naruto: Jeez! What of three people to a squad?! Kakashi: That’s….teamwork! Sakura: You mean, working together? Kakashi: Exactly. But it’s too late even if you realize that now. You might’ve been able to…take the bells if the three of you had come at me…Well, it’s too bad. Sakura (Thinking): Now wait a minute. Sakura: Why use teamwork if there were only two bells? If the three of us were to desperately go take the bells with one having to hold back, that wouldn’t be teamwork. That’d create internal discord. Kakashi: Of course! This is a test set up to purposely place you against each other. Naruto: Eh? Kakashi: It’s under just such conditions where one’s own interest aren’t the issue. The intention was to select those who could prioritize teamwork…Despite this, you fools…Sakura! You were only concerned with Sasuke and you didn’t even know where he was. And you didn’t care for Naruto who was right in front of your eyes…Naruto! All you do is run solo…

  • Kakashi presses his foot down on Sasuke’s head*

Kakashi: You labeled the other two as hindrances and acted on your own…Missions are carried out in squads! There’s no mistaking that ninjas need unsurpassed individual skills…But “teamwork” is considered more important than that. Individual actions that disrupt teamwork throw the team into crisis and lead to death…For example…

  • Kakashi pulls a kunai out of his pouch and holds it to Sasuke’s throat*

Kakashi: Sakura! Kill Naruto, or else Sasuke dies… Naruto and Sakura: What?! Kakashi: Is what will…happen. Sakura: Oh, I was so surprised. Naruto: *sighs in relief*

  • Kakashi spins a kunai around on his finger*

Kakashi: On top of having a hostage taken, you’re faced with two impossible choices and end up being killed.

  • Kakashi stands up, getting off Sasuke*

Kakashi: Every mission is a life risking assignment. Look at this…

  • Kakashi walks towards a memorial stone*

Kakashi: The many names engraved on this stone…These are all ninja who are called heroes in the village. Naruto: That, that, that, that! I like that! I’ve decided now to get my name engraved there, too! A hero! A hero! I’m not going to die like a dog! Kakashi: But…they’re not just ordinary heroes. Naruto: No kidding. Then, what kind of heroes are they? Kakashi: … Naruto: Hey! Hey! Kakashi: They are heroes who were killed in action. Naruto: Killed in action? Sakura: It means they died performing a mission. Naruto: … Sasuke: … Kakashi: This is a memorial. The names of my friends are also engraved here… Sakura: … Sasuke: … Naruto: … Kakashi: I’ll give you guys one more chance! However, after noon it’ll be a harsher battle to take the bell. Those who want to take on the challenge can eat lunch. However, don’t let Naruto have any. Naruto: Eeh?! Kakashi: It’s punishment for breaking the rules and attempting to eat lunch on your own. If someone lets him eat…that person will be disqualified on the spot. Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura: … Kakashi: I make the rules, here. Got it?!

  • Scene changes to Iruka, leaving the room that Hiruzen and he were in*

Iruka: I must be going. Hiruzen: Listen to me, Iruka. Iruka: Huh? Hiruzen: No matter what the result, don’t hold it against Kakashi… Iruka: Alright.

  • Scene changes back to the training grounds, as Sasuke and Sakura are eating lunch. Naruto’s stomach growls.*

Naruto: I’m okay with not eating lunch! No sweat at all! No sweat… Sasuke: Hmm? Here. Naruto: Huh? Sakura: H…hey, Sasuke. Sensei just said! Sasuke: It’s okay. There’s no sign of him now. The three of us are going to take the bells together. It’ll be trouble for me if he becomes a hindrance, so… Sakura (Thinking): Sasuke…

  • Sakura gulps and presents her boxed lunch to Naruto*

Naruto (Thinking): Sakura…

  • Kakashi hides behind a tree watching the three from afar*

Naruto: Thanks… Sakura: Don’t thank me. Just hurry up and eat. Naruto: But… Sakura: I’m on a diet…I mean…I just eat less than Sasuke. So you don’t need to worry. Naruto: But…see…

  • Naruto indicates that he can’t grab the lunch because of the rope tying him to the log*

Sakura: Wha…?! Sasuke: Hurry it up. We don’t know when he’ll be back… Sakura: It’s just this one time. Okay? You got it?! Naruto: I got it.

  • Sakura feeds Naruto. Kakashi appears in a massive cloud of smoke, while creating a gust of wind*

Kakashi: You three! Naruto: Aah! Sakura: Aah! Kakashi: You defied the rules so that means you know what’s coming…

  • Kakashi weaves hand signs, creating a thunderstorm above the training grounds*

Kakashi: Do you have…something to say? Naruto: But you see… Kakashi: Huh?! Naruto: But! But! But! You said, Sensei! These guys… Sasuke: We’re a three-man squad, right? Sakura: That’s right! The three of us are one, so! Naruto: That’s right, that’s right, that’s right! That’s right! Kakashi: The three of you are one, eh…You pass! Sakura: Huh? Naruto: Huh? Kakashi: You pass. Sakura: We passed? Why?

  • The thunderstorm above the training ground dissipates*

Kakashi: You guys are the first. Up until now, it was always just dunces who would meekly listen to what I said. A ninja must see through deception…In the world of ninja, those who break rules and codes are branded as garbage…But…Those who don’t cherish their friends are garbage worse than that.

  • Sakura reacts happily, Naruto cries, and Sasuke smiles*

Naruto: He’s…he’s…kinda…cool… Kakashi: That’s it for the exercise…Everyone passes! Team 7 starts their mission tomorrow! Sakura: Yes, sir! Sasuke: … Naruto: I did it! I’m a ninja! Ninja! Ninja! Kakashi: Let’s go home. Sakura (Thinking): Cha!

  • Naruto flails around, still tied up to the log, while everyone else leaves*

Naruto: I…knew this is how it’d turn out! Untie the rope!

  • Episode ends*
