Golden Kamuy, Episode 3: Kamuy Mosir

Role in the Episode

Okada Fumio is a 7th Division soldier who accompanies Noma Naoaki, Tamai Houzou, and Tanigaki Genjiro in their mission to capture Sugimoto Saichi. However, his role is extremely brief, and he meets an abrupt and tragic end when the brown bear attack is triggered.

Key Contributions in the Episode:

  • Pursuing Sugimoto
    • Fumio joins Naoaki, Houzou, and Genjiro as part of the 7th Division tracking team hunting Sugimoto and Asirpa.
    • Like the others, he is determined to capture or kill Sugimoto but does not exhibit much individual agency.
  • Recognition of Sugimoto
    • When Naoaki identifies Sugimoto as “Immortal Sugimoto”, Fumio reacts with shock and caution, reinforcing Sugimoto’s infamous reputation.
  • Dying in the Bear Attack
    • Houzou foolishly shoots into the bear den, causing a rampaging brown bear to awaken.
    • Fumio is the first victim—as Houzou is struck in the face, he accidentally misfires, shooting Fumio in the bottom lip.
    • The bullet exits through the back of Fumio’s head, killing him instantly.

Impact Rating: 2.5/10

Strengths:

  • His death scene is dramatic and contributes to the chaotic, brutal atmosphere of the bear attack.
  • He serves as an example of the 7th Division's lack of preparedness in dealing with Hokkaido’s wild threats.

Weaknesses:

  • Minimal screen time, with no personal characterization or development.
  • His death is incidental rather than meaningful, as he is killed by accident rather than directly by an opponent or major event.
  • Has no lasting influence on the plot, as his death does not change the course of Sugimoto’s story.

Final Verdict: Okada Fumio is a minor character with a fleeting presence, whose only notable action is dying due to a misfire. While his death adds to the tension of the episode, it is purely accidental and does not affect the story’s direction. Thus, his impact remains low.

Golden Kamuy, Episode 5: Race

Okada Fumio’s Role in the Episode:

Like Noma Naoaki and Tamai Houzou, Okada Fumio only appears in a flashback and has no direct involvement in the present timeline. His role is purely to serve as one of the soldiers attempting to execute Sugimoto Saichi in the past.

Key Contributions:

  • Part of Sugimoto’s Execution Squad (Flashback)
    • Along with Noma Naoaki and Tamai Houzou, Fumio is shown aiming his rifle at Sugimoto, attempting to execute him.
    • This scene leads to Sugimoto’s daring escape into a bear den, setting up the crucial event where he fights and kills a Matakarip brown bear.
    • The sequence serves to reinforce Sugimoto’s unbreakable survival instincts and his "Immortal" reputation.
  • Indirectly Contributes to a Major Theme
    • Asirpa compares Sugimoto’s recklessness to her father, Wilk, emphasizing that both men flirt with death yet always find a way to survive.
    • However, Okada himself is just a minor piece of this narrative device and has no individual significance.

Impact Rating: 1.0/10

  • Minimal Role: Only appears in a brief flashback, and does not affect the main storyline.
  • No Unique Contribution: He is interchangeable with the other two soldiers in the flashback (Noma Naoaki and Tamai Houzou).
  • No Lasting Influence: His actions do not extend beyond the past, making his overall impact negligible.

Much like Noma Naoaki and Tamai Houzou, Okada Fumio is merely a minor plot device rather than a full-fledged character.
