Vinland Saga, Episode 2: Sword
Synopsis
Mord is a newly introduced character in this episode, depicted as one of the young villagers eager for war alongside Ari, Grim, and Magni. His role primarily revolves around observing the unfolding events, providing commentary, and reacting to the arrival of the Jomsvikings.
Mord is first seen among the group of village boys eavesdropping on Thors' conversation with Floki. When Ari questions Thors' past as a warrior, Mord warns him that they might be overheard, showing a degree of caution and awareness. However, he remains intrigued by the discussion, as he and the others speculate on the Jomsvikings' strength and reputation.
As the village boys talk about joining Thors on the journey, Mord is more skeptical than Ari and Magni, bluntly telling Magni that he has no chance of being selected because he is too weak. This suggests that Mord has a somewhat realistic perspective on their chances, in contrast to the overconfidence displayed by Ari.
Later in the episode, as preparations for war begin, Mord is seen fully equipped with an axe and boasts that it can cut off a horse's head in one stroke. He appears excited about his weapon and eager to prove himself in battle. His enthusiasm mirrors that of his peers, as they discuss the best weapons for plundering and challenge each other to friendly combat.
Overall, Mord's presence in the episode reinforces the theme of young villagers idealizing war. While he is not as outspoken as Ari, he shares the same youthful naivety and excitement for battle, unaware of the harsh realities that Thors understands all too well.
